The NonLawyer's Key to the Courthouse Door

Introducing Learn at LawYou: Litigation Education for the Self-Represented

by Sherri L. Renner, J.D.  |  June 1, 2026

Most people who find LawYou are already mid-case. They came looking for resources, found a community, and discovered that what they needed most wasn’t just information — it was education. There’s a difference.

Information tells you what the law says. Education teaches you how to use it.

Learn at LawYou was built on that distinction.

What Learn at LawYou Is

Learn at LawYou is a litigation education platform for self-represented litigants, designed to build the research, writing, speaking, pleading, discovery, mediation, and trial skills that meaningful participation in the justice system requires. Every course and workshop on the site was created by and is led by me — a former litigator who has been coaching pro se litigants since 2008 and who understands, from both sides of the courtroom, what it actually takes to advocate for yourself effectively.

The curriculum is organized around three areas: understanding litigation — how it begins, how it ends, and what happens in between; research, writing, and rhetoric — finding the law, reading it, and using it to structure your communications; and practice workshops — where you develop and sharpen your speaking and argumentation skills in a live, supportive setting.

That last piece — the live workshops — is what sets Learn at LawYou apart from a library of videos or a stack of articles. Reading about oral arguments is useful. Delivering one out loud, in front of others, and receiving direct feedback on your content, your delivery, and your overall impression is something else entirely.

What’s Available Now

Own the Floor, Part 1: Oral Arguments ($50) is a course and workshop for pro se litigants who are ready to stop dreading their hearing and start owning it. The self-study materials cover what oral arguments are, how to prepare, and what to expect in the courtroom. The live workshop is where you practice out loud, get and give feedback, in a low-stakes environment before you walk into the high-stakes one.

Proof Points: Propositions and Evidence ($60) addresses one of the most consequential blind spots in pro se litigation: the gap between what you believe your evidence proves and what it actually proves to someone who doesn’t share your lived experience. Proof Points introduces you to the concepts of relevance and probative value, then puts them to work in a workshop where you present a proposition and evidence, give and receive scored feedback, and leave with a clearer understanding of the relationship between proposition and evidence.

Court Cafe (free) is a weekly body doubling work session — a structured, quiet hour on Zoom to sit down with your case and make progress, in the company of others doing the same. No instruction, no agenda, no pressure. Just time, structure, and community.

Coming soon: Three Ring Circus, a litigation overview, and Contempt of Court — what it is, what it isn’t, and what to do about it.

Who It’s For

Learn at LawYou is for anyone navigating the civil justice system without an attorney. But it was designed with particular care for domestic violence survivors in family court, who are often managing the demands of complex litigation while managing everything else their situation requires. Every course is built on the belief that you are more capable than the system has led you to believe, and that the right education, delivered the right way, can close the gap between where you are and where you need to be.

You can do this. And you don’t have to do it alone.
